BUTTERFLIES OF LOVE : THE JUG OF ALE A pound ,one solitary pound to get into the Jug on a Wednesday and three bands playing plus downstairs DJ. Whats more,THE BUTTERFLIES OF LOVE from NEW HAVEN ,CONNECTICUT,as they keep reminding us,are playing tonight. Are American bands fab or what, the way they relax into a gig,own the stage, invite you in to their little world for half an hour or so. TBOL thank the crowd ,the support bands, the promoter, the sound man before they even play a note, its crass but for some reason Americans can get away with it. This is my first time with The Butterflies and as an enthusiastic admirer of lo fi ,arthouse pop,I 'm on their side from the first minor chord and first ringing Rhodes . TBOL are in the Wheat,GALAXIE 500 stream of unconsciousness with an underlying 70 's groove, their dual singers peddling mournful tales of just how crap life is ,when you re in an American band playing Moseley on a wet Wednesday for a quid in. I loved Denny ,balding, stooping ,his heartfelt voice really meaning it man.The single is out soon, though I doubt anyone will notice, bands like these are made for the anonymity of a students bedroom ,and my record collection. |
